Alabama Black Colleges and Universities
Playing a crucial role in the 1950s and '60's Civil Rights Movement, Alabama is a great place for students interested in African-American history and culture. Tuskegee University, the famous black college first headed by Booker T. Washington, is one of many historically black colleges in Alabama. Others include Concordia College in Selma, Oakwood College in Huntsville, and Talladega College in Talledega. Miles College, yet another historically black university in Alabama, lays claim to a convenient location inside the Birmingham metropolitan area, an epicenter of protests for equality that garnered international attention. Many accomplished and powerful African-Americans got their start in Alabama. Rosa Parks, Nat King Cole, Charles Barkley, Coretta Scott King, Condoleezza Rice, and Carl Lewis were all born in this Southern state.
