Alabama A&M University, founded in 1875 as the Huntsville Normal School, is a historically black college in Normal, Alabama, a suburb of Huntsville. The school's first principal, William Hooper Councill, was an emancipated slave. After nearly a century of growth, the school's name became Alabama A&M University in 1969.The university's five schools offer a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as opportunities to study abroad. Alabama A&M University is a top producer of African-Americans with Ph.Ds in physics and in plant and soil science. Freshman students particularly appreciate the school's "Changing Lanes" mentoring program, in which outstanding upperclassmen are paired with freshmen to help them get off to a strong start and adjust academically and socially to a college environment. This historically black college focuses on teaching, research, and public service, and has a strong commitment to community extension programs.
