Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama is a historically black college. In 1867, nine emancipated slaves founded the Lincoln School of Marion in Marion, AL, as a normal school, or teacher training school. As the result of growth in mission and funding, the school eventually moved to Montgomery (in 1887) and became Alabama State University (in 1969).Students from across the nation and many foreign countries come to Alabama State University to obtain degrees in the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education, Health Sciences, Visual and Performing Arts, and Aerospace Studies. The graduate program at this historically black college includes master's degrees, education specialist degrees, and doctorates in a variety of specialties. Students can choose from extracurricular activities that include 70 student organizations; strong intercollegiate and intramural sports for men and women; and many cultural, music, and religious groups.
