Bishop State Community College in Mobile, Alabama was founded in 1927 as a branch of Alabama State College. At first, the historically black college offered only summer extension courses for teachers. In 1936 the school became a two-year college, and in 1965 it became part of the Alabama university system. In 1971 it was renamed Bishop State Junior College to recognize its president at that time, Dr. S. D. Bishop.Today, Bishop State Community College is an open-admission, state-supported institution and operates four separate campuses within the city of Mobile. Seven additional off-campus sites are located throughout Mobile and Washington counties. Students at this historically black college can earn two-year degrees, diplomas, and certificates in six academic areas: Education, Humanities, Natural Science and Mathematics, Business and Economics, Social Sciences, and Health-related Professions.
