Having earned university status from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Oakwood College changed its name to Oakwood University at the beginning of 2008. Regardless of its name, this historically black college has emphasized rigorous academic training and community service since it was founded in 1896. Most students live on the school's massive campus near Huntsville, Alabama. The university frequently earns high rankings from magazines and college review publications for its strong medical science and liberal arts programs.Founded by Seventh-Day Adventists, Oakwood University hasn't lost sight of its religious mission.
