About Tuskegee University

Established in 1881 by the Alabama State Legislature, Tuskegee University is both a historical landmark in African-American heritage and a contemporary force in private liberal arts education. Booker T. Washington, the university's legendary founder and first president, led the institution to prominence in agricultural, industrial, and "normal" (teaching) education under such noteworthy professors as George Washington Carver. In 1965, the Tuskegee University campus was designated a National Historic Landmark, a testament to its prominence in the history of U.S. higher education generally and African-American advancement specifically.

Today, Tuskegee University continues to lead its diverse student body to academic achievement in the liberal arts and sciences. The university counts among its distinctive strengths its science, architecture, business, engineering, and health programs, all grounded in a strong liberal arts foundation.
