History
Allen University is a four-year, private, coed liberal arts institution, founded in 1870 as Payne Institute by the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. In 1880, the school reopened under the name Allen University in honor of Richard Allen, founder of the AME Church. Founded to provide higher education in a Christian environment, the development of a wholesome approach to religion is one of the basic objectives of the school. The University provides an undergraduate education with a strong commitment to teaching, community service, and research. It continues to expand the curriculum to meet the demonstrated needs of society and students. Allen’s sound liberal arts program prepares its students to meet the challenges of professional programs and careers.
