Arkansas Black Colleges and Universities

Home to the renowned African-American poet, Maya Angelou, Arkansas boasts four historically black universities. Three of these Arkansas black colleges have enrollments of less than a thousand: Shorter College in North Little Rock, Arkansas Baptist College in Little Rock, and Philander Smith College, also in Little Rock. The larger University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, which has recently distinguished itself as a center of aquaculture, offers a much larger student body and slightly lower tuition.

Arkansas' capital, Little Rock, is remembered as the site of a pivotal confrontation during the Civil Rights Movement that occurred in 1957, when President Eisenhower dispatched federal troops to ensure that the "Little Rock 9" could safely attend classes at the newly desegregated Central High School.
