History
Benedict College is a four-year, private, coed, liberal arts college affiliated with the Baptist Church. Founded in 1870 as Benedict Institute, the College has sought to combine the traditions of the Christian faith with the heritage of African Americans. Originally, instruction was offered at a postsecondary level. The school was chartered in 1884. In 1984, the school awarded its first degree and adopted its present name, Benedict College.
The twenty-five-building campus is situated on 38 acres and ../includes the Ponders Fine Arts/Humanities Center and a Learning Resource Center that houses the library. There is an architectural blend of newly built facilities and recently renovated historical buildings. This traditionally black college is a United Negro College Fund member school.
