History

Cheyney University of Pennsylvania (CUP) is a four-year, state-supported, coed, liberal arts institution founded in 1837 by Philadelphia Quaker Richard Humphreys. The school moved to Cheyney in 1902, began postsecondary instruction in 1931, and awarded its first bachelor’s degree in 1932. CUP was originally named the Institute for Colored Youth and changed names five times between 1903 and 1959, when it adopted its present name.

Cheyney continues in its original mission to train African-American teachers, but its programs have expanded to include journalism, medicine, business, science, industrial arts, communications, sports, and politics. Cheyney students represent a variety of races, cultures, and nationalities, and the university celebrates this diversity by fostering cultural and social experiences and supportive services that will enable individual students to meet the challenges of a dynamic, competitive, technological society.

CUP is situated on 275 acres in a rural area that is steadily becoming more suburban. New facilities include three dormitories, a dining hall, and a student center. A featured campus attraction is the planetarium in the George Washington Carver Center. The University is one of thirteen members of the Pennsylvania University System.
