History
Claflin College is a four-year, private, coeducational liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Founded in 1869, the origin of Claflin College may be traced to Baker Biblical Institute, which was founded in 1866. In 1871, the then-named Claflin University and Baker Biblical Institute merged. The College Department of Claflin granted its first diploma in the year 1882. The property on which the present-day college stands was formerly where the Orangeburg Female Academy was housed.
In 1872, the South Carolina General Assembly designated the South Carolina Agricultural and Mechanical Institute as a coordinate department of Claflin University. This arrangement remained intact until 1896 when the Act of Separation severed the State Agricultural and Mechanical Institute (SAMI) from Claflin; SAMI later became South Carolina State College.
Claflin’s mission is to provide educational opportunities for students who desire a liberal arts education within a Christian environment. The curriculum centers on the Christian ethic, service to mankind, and appreciation of the cultural contributions of all people.
Located on 29 acres, the seventeen-building campus embraces both historic and modern buildings. This traditionally black college is a United Negro College Fund Member.
