HISTORY

Coahoma Community College is a two-year, comprehensive, coed college, founded in 1924 as Coahoma County Agricultural High School. Coahoma was the first county in Mississippi to provide such an institution for African Americans. In 1949, twenty-five years later, the junior college was added and the name changed to Coahoma Junior College and Agricultural High School. Two years after adding the junior college, Coahoma became the first public junior college for blacks to receive funding from the Mississippi state government. July of 1989 marked the change of the school’s name to Coahoma Community College

The 99-acre campus features twenty-five buildings in an agrarian setting. Most students are from Coahoma, Bolivar, Quitman, and Sunflower Counties; however, the College also attracts students from other states and other countries. Coahoma offers associate degrees that can be transferred to four-year colleges or universities. In addition, certificates are offered in a variety of vocational programs. The mission of the College is to teach, conduct research, and provide community service.
