History
Coppin State College (CSC) is a four-yea, comprehensive, state-supported, coed, liberal arts university. Coppin’s history began in 1900 at Frederick Douglass High School, which was designated by the Baltimore City School Board as a one-year teacher preparatory course for black elementary school teachers. In 1902, the program expanded to a two-year Normal Department within the high school. By 1909, the program was separated administratively from the high school and given its own principal.
In 1926, the teacher program was renamed Fannie Jackson Coppin Normal School in honor of the renowned educator. Several significant changes had taken place by 1938. The curriculum was lengthened to four years; authority was given to grant the bachelor of science degree; and the school’s name was changed to Coppin Teacher’s College. Coppin struggled for survival for the next twelve years before becoming part of the Maryland higher education system under the State Department of Education. The College’s name then changed to Coppin State Teachers College.
Coppin moved to its present location in 1952. In 1963, the Board of Trustees ruled that the College’s degree-granting authority should no longer be limited to teacher education. The College’s name was officially changed to Coppin State College and it conferred its first bachelor of arts degree in 1967. In 1988, Coppin State became part of the newly formed University of Maryland System, giving its students access to the libraries and research facilities of fourteen affiliated campuses.
Coppin State’s mission is to provide high-quality higher education in the arts and sciences, as well as in professional and preprofessional programs. Its focus is on solving the problems, needs, and aspirations of the people of Baltimore’s central city.
