The University of the District of Columbia (UDC) has evolved dramatically since its inception in 1851 as a public teaching college for African-American women. Today, the university is a comprehensive, co-ed institution with strong programs in arts and sciences, business, engineering, and law. Mergers with the Washington Technical Institute and the Federal City College in 1974 established UDC as a force in technical and applied training as well as liberal arts and sciences education.Offering certificates as well as associate, bachelor, and master degrees, the University of the District of Columbia strives to meet both the career and academic development needs of the region's residents.
