Florida Black Colleges and Universities

It's not all retired people and beachgoers who flock to Florida these days. Black college students may be interested to know that such African-American luminaries as actors Angela Basset and Sidney Poitier, as well as celebrated writer Zora Neale Hurston and 4-Star General Daniel James, are all native Floridians. Top-ranked Florida A&M University is a large, public, historically black college in Tallahassee. Three other private historically black colleges in Florida offer education on smaller campuses: Bethune Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, and Florida Memorial College in Miami.

In addition to the juggernaut tourism industry, black college students in Florida may find ample opportunities in health care, agriculture, environmental engineering, and the arts.
