Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida is a historically black college founded in 1904 by a black woman, Mary McLeod Bethune. The school's original name was the Daytona Educational and Industrial Training School for Negro Girls. Over the years, the school became coeducational, then became a junior college, and in 1941 began offering four-year baccalaureate degrees. Bethune-Cookman University was and still is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.Today, in Daytona Beach and at satellite campuses throughout Florida, this historically black college offers nearly 40 undergraduate and graduate degrees in the school's seven colleges: Arts and Humanities, Business, Education, Nursing, Engineering and Math, Social Studies, and Graduate and Professional Studies. Special resources for freshmen include the Reading Lab, Writing Center, and online educational technology tutorials. Bethune-Cookman University is also the home of nationally recognized intercollegiate athletic programs, instrumental groups, and choral groups.
