History
Florida A&M University (FAMU) is a four-year, state-supported, coed, liberal arts institution, founded in 1887 as the State Normal College for Colored Students. In 1890, the school became a land-grant institution. In 1891, the college was moved from Copeland Street to its present location and became the State Normal and Industrial College for Colored Students.
In 1905, postsecondary-level instruction was first offered. Four years later, the name was changed to Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College. It wasn’t until 1910 that the first baccalaureate degree was awarded. When the school became a university in 1953, the present name was adopted. In 1984, the University was granted authority to offer its first Doctor of Philosophy degree. Five years later, the first Ph.D. in pharmacology was awarded.
The school opened with 2 instructors and 15 students. Presently, it employs more than 460 full-time faculty members and enrolls more than 9,000 students. The University was ranked fourth in the nation in enrolling National Achievement finalists. One of nine universities in the State University System of Florida, FAMU places great emphasis on instruction, research, and service to promote academic excellence and to improve the quality of life for those it serves. As a land-grant school, the institution is mandated to give high priority to continuing education and public service.
Located on 419 acres, the 131-building campus is a blend of modern and traditional buildings. The Black Archives Research Center and Museum has become a tourist attraction. The most recent buildings include the President’s home and the College of Engineering. Plans are under way for a new research facility in arts and for a science classroom building.
