History
Florida Memorial College is a four-year, private, coed, liberal arts college affiliated with the Baptist Church. Its origins are with Florida Baptist Institute, founded in 1879, and Florida Baptist Academy, founded in 1892. The two institutions merged in 1941 to form Florida Normal and Industrial Memorial Institute. The school became a four-year college and awarded its first bachelor’s degree in 1949.
In 1950, this college was renamed Florida Normal and Industrial Memorial College. The present name, Florida Memorial College, was acquired in 1963. Originally located in St. Augustine, Florida, the facility moved in 1968 to its present location.
As the College continues to grow, it holds to the belief that education contributes to the quality of a person’s life. The definitive mission of Florida Memorial College is to inculcate in students a desire for lifelong learning and to encourage in them a commitment to leadership through service that will enhance their lives and the lives of others. It is dedicated to free exchange of ideas, pursuit of knowledge, and the transmission of black history and heritage.
The campus consists of a cluster of modern air-conditioned buildings, none of which is more than a 3-minute walk from the farthest point on campus. Florida Memorial also offers courses at four off-campus centers, including Hialeah Center in Hialeah, Florida; Charles R. Drew Center in Miami, Florida; and Richmond Heights Center in Richmond Heights, Florida. The William Lehman Aviation Center is a $7.4-million, three-story, state-of-the-art complex that contains modern, spacious classrooms, laboratories, and simulation trainers for airway sciences. This traditionally black college is a United Negro College Fund member school.
