History

Fort Valley State University (FVSU) is a four-year, state-supported, liberal arts, coed college founded in 1895. Fort Valley State is the result of the 1939 merger between Fort Valley High and Industrial School and the State Teachers and Agricultural College.

The Fort Valley High and Industrial School was established in 1895, by leading white and negro citizens for the education of blacks in the south. Through private donations the school continued to grow. Students helped to construct several of the buildings between 1926 and 1937. An affiliation with the American Church Institute was discontinued in 1939 when the state took control of the school.

The State Teachers and Agricultural College was established in 1902 with the enrollment of seven young people. In 1916, the school became a senior high school. By an act of the Georgia legislature in 1922, the school was named the Agriculture and Mechanical School. The school was renamed State Teachers and Agricultural College in 1931.

The 1939 consolidation of Fort Valley and State Teachers and Agricultural College was made possible initially by a grant from the Julius Rosenwald Fund. Two years later, the first bachelor’s degree was awarded. The school became part of the University System of Georgia, a consortium of thirty-four public colleges and universities, and it also became one of two land-grant institutions in the state of Georgia. As a land-grant school, this traditionally black college continues its mission to provide educational opportunities for all segments of the population. In 1966, the school's name changed to Fort Valley State University.

Fort Valley is located on 650 acres, with approximately fifty-five buildings. The campus architecture is a blend of stately white buildings constructed by students in the early 1900s and ultramodern buildings of succeeding decades.
