First launched as a program within one of America's most prestigious historically black colleges, Morehouse School of Medicine evolved into an independent institution in 1981. Since then, Morehouse School of Medicine students have honed their skills while practicing at Atlanta's Grady Memorial Hospital. This black college's focus on urban medicine underscores its mission to serve people of color in need of quality health care.Morehouse School of Medicine distinguishes itself from other medical colleges by focusing on developing strong primary care practitioners. In an economy where many doctors feel pressured to take on a higher-paying specialty, Morehouse emphasizes its roots in the African-American community and the importance of quality medical care for black citizens. As a result, many alumni of this influential black college practice in inner cities and in rural communities typically overlooked by graduates of other medical schools.
