History

Hampton University is a four-year, private, coed liberal arts institution that was founded in 1868 as Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute to educate former slaves who had gathered behind the Union line on the Virginia Peninsula. Its original purpose was to train selected blacks who would then teach and lead their people. Postsecondary-level programs were instituted in 1922, the first bachelor’s degree was awarded in 1926, and graduate school began in 1928.

In the early years, residence quarters were a problem. The men lived in army tents and the women lived in barracks until the completion of Virginia Hall. The Hampton Singers, a group that toured communities in the north, raised some of the money for this building.

Hampton University has deep roots in the social history of America and seeks to motivate its students to be responsive to the problems affecting our society. It continues its mission to provide education for the educationally underserved as it seeks out promising students from outstanding high schools. While effective teaching and scholarly research play important roles, Hampton places the student at the center of its planning.

The 204-acre campus comprises approximately fifty main buildings and seventy-five auxiliary structures. The “Emancipated Oak Tree” stands on the Hampton University campus in an area that served as the first classroom for the new freedmen. The Emancipation Proclamation was read to area residents under the tree in 1883, it now serves as a symbol of freedom and education. The Wigwam building, originally a male residence hall erected in 1878, is a reminder of Hampton’s role in the education of Native Americans. Five of the buildings are designated National Historic Landmarks, including “The Mansion,” which predates the founding of the University. Ogden Hall is recognized as having the best acoustics in the state and is home to the Virginia opera and symphony companies.
