HISTORY

Hinds Community College is a state-supported, two-year, coed college founded in 1903 as the Utica Normal and Industrial Institute. Fourteen years later, the Hinds County Agricultural High School was founded in Utica, and in 1922 it became Hinds Junior College. In 1958, Utica Normal and Industrial became Utica Junior College as a result of becoming public and joining the Mississippi system of junior colleges. Meanwhile, Hinds Junior College expanded its locations to include the Jackson branch in 1970 and the Vicksburg-Warren County branch in 1975.

A 1983 merger of Hinds Junior College and the historically black Utica Junior College, as well as the inclusion of the Rankin branch, created Hinds Community College. With the merger and expansion came a new college mission to create an educational system conducive to learning for both the traditional and the nontraditional student.

The Utica Campus is the oldest of seven locations of Hinds Community College. The 236-acre campus with its twenty-six buildings is 3.5 miles south of Utica, Mississippi. More than fifty academic, cultural, and vocational programs are available at this location. The Hinds County Agricultural High School is located on this campus.
