Illinois Black Colleges and Universities

The birthplace of Abraham Lincoln and the site of important political triumphs by Harold Washington, Carol Moseley Braun, and Barack Obama, Illinois has played a crucial role in recent African-American history. Black college students may be interested in Illinois' many prestigious universities, which offer diverse programs of studies and are especially renowned for fields like engineering, architecture, and agriculture. The state's lone historically black college is the well respected Chicago State University.

Chicago, the third most populous city in the United States, may tempt black college students with its many museums, famous sports teams, exciting nightlife, and thriving music scene. Chicago's infamous history as a hub of organized crime still tantalizes tourists, though more are drawn to its status as a regional center of entertainment, sports, and art.
