Chicago State University, in Chicago, Illinois is a historically black college founded in 1867 as Cook County Normal School. The institution, which began as a teacher training school and originally operated out of a railroad freight car, grew and changed over the years to become a comprehensive liberal arts institution and a fully accredited public university in 1971.Chicago State University includes the colleges of Arts and Science, Business, Education, Pharmacy, and Health Science, as well as a School of Graduate and Professional Studies. The university offers many baccalaureate and master's degree programs as well as a Doctorate of Education. This historically black college offers sponsored internship experiences where students can combine theory and practice, and also publishes the Illinois Schools Journal, a professional journal for elementary, secondary, and postsecondary educators.
