History
Jarvis Christian College is a four-year, private, independent, coeducational liberal arts college affiliated with the Disciple of Christ Christian Church. Though established as Jarvis Christian Institute in 1912, the idea for the school began as early as 1904. In 1914, high school subjects were added to the curriculum and two years later junior college courses were added. The school was incorporated in 1928. The name changed to Jarvis Christian College in 1937, the year senior college courses were added. Two years later, in 1939, the first bachelor’s degrees were awarded.
Jarvis Christian was the brainchild of the Negro Disciples of Christ in Texas and the Christian Woman’s Board of Missions. The school was named after Major J. J. Jarvis, who donated 456 acres of land for the school. The students who attended the school assisted in its construction. This barter and labor concept was the earliest form of a work-study program.
Jarvis College’s original mission, “to keep and maintain a school for the elevation and education of the Negro race, to educate the head, heart, and hand and to produce useful citizens and earnest Christians,” has not changed, although the direction of the educational programs has changed dramatically since its founding. This historically black institution is a member of the United Negro College Fund.
The fifteen-building campus is situated in an attractive wooded area of about 1,000 acres, which provides adequate room for future expansion. The campus proper covers 243 acres.
