History

Kentucky State University (KSU) is a four-year, state-supported, coed liberal arts university, founded in 1886 as the State Normal School for Colored Persons. The school was established as a normal school for the training of black teachers for black schools. In 1890, the institution became a land-grant college, adding several new departments to the school’s curriculum.

As the school’s programs changed, so did the name. In 1902, it became Kentucky Normal and Industrial Institute for Colored Persons. In 1926, Normal was dropped from the name. A high school was added in 1930. The name was changed to Kentucky State College for Negroes in 1938. Negro was dropped from the name in 1952, and the school became Kentucky State College. After gaining university status, the name was changed to Kentucky State University in 1973.

Current president Mary Smith states, “Education should help students learn skills which help them to analyze and solve problems in life, as well as free the mind so that the learner’s creativity is unleashed.” She contends that each student at Kentucky State is helped to develop these skills.

To emphasize quality and individuality, KSU offers programs such as Whitney Young Jr.’s Study of the Great Books or the Mentor’s Advisement Program, both designed to build small intellectual and social communities.

The thirty-one-building campus continues to grow in size and programs. The school developed a new mission in 1982, aiming to become a major repository for the collection of artifacts, books, and records related to its history of educating black citizens. The collection is available to interested students, faculty members, and visiting scholars for research and general usage. KSU offers students career opportunities related to state government services and participation in U.S. Department of Agricultural programs, as one of two land-grant institutions in the system.
