HISTORY
Lawson State Community College is a two-year,
state-supported, coed college formed in 1975 by the merging of two separate
state-supported institutions: Wenonah State Technical Institute, established in
1949, and Lawson State Junior College, established in 1963.
Dr. T. A. Lawson was director of the Wenonah State Technical Institute and
later assumed the responsibilities as first president of Lawson State Junior College in 1963.
When Wenonah and Lawson
became one institution, Lawson State Community College became the only public,
two-year, coed community college in central Alabama serving the needs of
black students. The school’s mission is to provide educational programs and
services that are comprehensive, flexible, accessible, and community related.
Together, with the Wenonah High School and Wenonah Elementary School, Lawson State Community College helps to form an
educational complex for high academic achievement. It is also part of the
Alabama College System.
The suburban campus
consists of twelve buildings on 98 acres, with the academic part of the campus
on the northern side of Wilson Road and the technical part
on the southern side of Wilson Road. Facilities include a Learning Resource Center, which houses the
library, and Shop Building No. 2 for classes in plumbing, carpentry, cabinet
making, and masonry.

Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to award the Associate of
