History

Livingstone College is a four-year, private, coed, liberal arts college affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Zion Church. Livingstone was founded in 1879 under the name of Zion Wesley Institute. In 1885, the name changed to Zion Wesley College. In 1887, the College awarded its first baccalaureate degree and adopted its present name.

The AME Zion ministers who founded Livingstone “wished to promote a type of education which would make for self-reliance in their race.” These visionary leaders believed through “unswerving faith in self and God they could succeed in establishing an institution to educate blacks.” Livingstone College started in the parsonage of the late Bishop C. R. Harris. In 1882, it moved to a one-building, 40-acre site. The campus has increased to twenty-one buildings on 272 acres, attracting students from the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, and Africa.

Although Livingstone College’s programs have expanded, it continues to provide an undergraduate school and seminary to educate men and women in liberal arts and theology. The school offers baccalaureate and master’s programs in theology. This historically black college is a United Negro College Fund (UNCF) school member.
