Louisiana Black Colleges and Universities
Louisiana is renowned for its unique cuisine, music, and cultural life. Black college students with an appreciation for African-American music may come to Louisiana in the hopes of hearing the musical descendants of Louis Armstrong, Jellyroll Morton, Fats Domino, and other legendary native Louisianans. Still rebuilding from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Louisiana's most famous city, New Orleans, remains an international center of jazz, funk, and Mardi Gras celebrations.Louisiana is the birthplace of the Southern University System, the only historically black college university system in the world, with locations in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Shreveport. It Is also home to Grambling State University, another public historically black college in Grambling, as well as two private historically black colleges: Dillard University and Xavier University, both in New Orleans.
