About Dillard University

Dillard University is small, historically black liberal arts college founded in 1869. The fifty-five acre campus is located in the heart of the traditional Gentilly Community, a residential district in New Orleans. Students at Dillard University enjoy easy access to New Orleans's vibrant social and cultural events. At graduation, students walk down the Avenue of Oaks, a live-oak-lined street that runs through campus.

Majors at Dillard are divided into six divisions: business, educational and psychological studies, humanities, natural sciences, nursing, and social sciences. Dillard consistently places high in college rankings, both among black colleges and among Southern liberal arts schools. The nursing program is particularly renowned. Notable alumni of Dillard include the jazz pianist Ellis Marsalis, Jr., the comedian Garrett Morris, and Ruth Simmons, the first black female president of an Ivy League college.
