Grambling State University is a public historically black college located in the small town of Grambling, Louisiana. Part of the University of Louisiana System, it was established in 1901 by black farmers who saw a need for education of black students in northwestern Louisiana. The town of Grambling is a short drive to the larger cities of Monroe and Shreveport.Grambling State University offers associate's through doctoral levels of degree programs through its five colleges. Distance learning and continuing education programs are also available. The university is known for offering the only PhD in developmental education in the United States. Grambling's Mighty Tiger Marching Band is considered one of the best show bands in the country.
