Bowie State University in Bowie, Maryland, just east of Washington, DC, is a historically black college founded in 1865. At first, the institution was a normal school--that is, a teacher-training school--and it held its first classes in the African Baptist Church in Baltimore.Since 1865, Bowie State University has evolved from a "normal school" into a full-service university. The school is one of four regional, comprehensive universities in the Maryland University System, and granted its first graduate degree--a Master's in Education--in 1970. Students at this historically black college can earn undergraduate and graduate degrees in four colleges: Arts and Sciences, Education, Business, and Professional Studies. Christa McAuliffe, the first teacher in space, who died in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986, is one of a long list of famous Bowie State University alumni.
