Michigan Black Colleges and Universities

The Great Lakes state of Michigan has played an undeniably important role in bringing African-Americans to a prominent place in contemporary American culture. Known as Motown because of its history as the Ford headquarters, Detroit has launched the national and international careers of African-American musicians like Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, and Michael Jackson. Aside from a thriving and historical music culture, Detroit offers black college students a regional hub for the performing arts, a black majority of around eighty percent, and proximity to Winsor, Ontario, a popular destination in Canada.

The first historically black college in Michigan, Detroit's Lewis College of Business, was founded in 1928. Black students in Detroit may find prestigious programs in business, engineering, manufacturing, and the humanities.
