Mississippi Black Colleges and Universities

Want to study under the oak where the Emancipation Proclamation was first read, or walk the halls that Medgar Evers once did? Mississippi's black colleges are steeped in history--like Tougaloo College and the Freedom Riders, or Alcorn State University, the country's first state-supported college for black students.

While the historical significance of Mississippi's colleges and universities attracts many young black college students, that's not the only thing that draws them in. From casinos headlining top-name entertainers to The Delta, a mecca for blues and rock, Mississippi is electrifying. Jackson, in particular, is a center of activism, medicine, and gospel music, its Fondren District full of art and boutiques, cafes and hopping nightlife. Jackson is host to Hinds Community College and Jackson State University. Other historically black Mississippi colleges include Rust College, Coahoma Community College, and Mississippi Valley State University.
