Alcorn State University is located in Alcorn, Mississippi, 80 miles southwest of Jackson. The school, named for Alabama Governor James L. Alcorn, was founded in 1871 as a black college for men; women were admitted in 1895. Renamed Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1878, the institution became Alcorn State University in 1974. The school has two campuses, in Lorman and in Natchez.The historically black college is located in an area rich with Civil War history and attractions. Teaching and public service are the school's focuses, but there's also a strong research component. Alcorn State University's seven colleges offer associate's, bachelor's, master's, and specialist degrees in the liberal and fine arts, agricultural research, technology, and nursing. The school supports championship men's and women's athletic teams as well as one of the largest U.S. marching bands, and offers the opportunity to participate in more than 40 student clubs and organizations.
