About Jackson State University

Jackson State University is a public historically black college located in Jackson, Mississippi. The school was founded as a Baptist Seminary in 1877 in Natchez. It moved to Jackson shortly thereafter, where it earned the title the Urban University of Mississippi. Jackson is the largest city in Mississippi, as well as the state capital. Jackson State is only five minutes from downtown Jackson, but it retains the sprawling feel of a traditional college campus, complete with tree-lined roads and walkways.

Popular degree programs at Jackson State University include business and computer science. Jackson State offers bachelor's through doctoral degrees. It is also headquarters of the Global-World HIV/AIDS Alliance, a group of institutions working to reduce the negative impact of AIDS among minority groups.
