History
Morehouse is a private, independent, four-year liberal arts college for men. It was founded in 1867 in Augusta, Georgia as the Augusta Institute; its purpose, to train freed slaves to read and write. The school moved to Atlanta in 1879 and expanded its scope to prepare blacks for the ministry. Consequently, it was called Atlanta Baptist Seminary. In 1894, the first college instruction was introduced and in 1897, the first bachelor’s degree was granted and the name changed to AtlantaBaptistCollege. In 1913, the name changed to its present name, MorehouseCollege. The Morehouse School of Medicine was established in 1975 and became independent of the College in 1981.
A cooperative agreement was established in 1929 among Clark Atlanta University, Spelman College, and Morehouse College. The cooperative later expanded to include Morris Brown College, the Interdenominational Theological Center, and the Morehouse School of Medicine. The subsequent conglomeration is presently called the Atlanta University Center and allows students to use the facilities of a large university community while attending a smaller liberal arts college.
Although Morehouse expanded its facilities and programs, it holds true to its mission to educate and nurture black male leadership. The nation’s only historically all black-male college feels a special responsibility for teaching its students about the history and culture of blacks. This commitment to develop men with disciplined minds who will lead lives of leadership, service, and self-realization is evident in the fact that Morehouse has a legacy of producing black male leaders who are dynamic in their varied professions. President Leroy Keith states, “Morehouse has an illustrious history of excellence in the provision of educational opportunities; our alumni have distinguished themselves in many professions throughout the world.” The school alumni include a long list of distinguished leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Maynard Jackson, Andrew Young, and Edwin Moses. Notables such as Oprah Winfrey and Spike Lee have donated millions of dollars for scholarship endowments.
Dotted with a mixture of old and an increasing number of new buildings, the campus forms part of the Atlanta University Center, the largest private educational complex with a predominantly black enrollment in the world. The Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel is a multipurpose facility named in honor of the college’s most distinguished alumnus. This historically black college is a United Negro College Fund member school and is one of three black institutions with a Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society represented on campus.
