History
Morgan State University is a four-year, state-supported, coed university founded in 1867 as Centenary Biblical Institute. The institution’s original mission was to prepare black men for Christian ministry. In 1890, the name was changed to Morgan College in honor of Dr. Littleton F. Morgan, former chairman of the board of trustees and a generous donor. The school awarded its first baccalaureate degree in 1895.
During its first fifty years, Morgan College sustained steady growth, marked by the addition of normal and academic curricular offerings, the enrollment of young women, and the establishment of two branch schools. One branch, the Princess Anne Academy (established in 1886) at Olney, Princess Anne, Maryland, exists today as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. The other, Virginia Collegiate and Industrial Institute at Lynchburg, was destroyed by fire in 1917.
From 1917 to 1919, Morgan College purchased the property on which it is presently located. Morgan became part of the Maryland State College system in 1939, changing its name to Morgan State College. University status was granted to the college in 1975, and its name was changed to Morgan State University.
Located in a northeastern Baltimore community akin to the suburbs, the institution serves as Maryland’s public urban university, mandated to provide education to students from urban communities who might not otherwise pursue higher education–part-time adult learners as well as gifted and talented students. This traditionally black college ranks in the top 10 percent of schools in number of students who pursue terminal degrees.
The thirty-three-building campus is situated on 122 acres. The School of Engineering, Science Building, and Blount Towers are three new state-of-the-art facilities built in the 1990s.
