History
Morris College is a four-year, private, coeducational liberal arts college affiliated with the Baptist Church. It was founded in 1908 "for the Christian and intellectual training of Negro youth." Teacher education and certification were the primary goals. The school was founded by impoverished blacks without any formal education who possessed an unshakable faith in God and a need to provide others with the educational opportunities they did not have. The original normal program was discontinued in 1929, and the following year the elementary school ceased operation. During the next two years, Morris was a junior college only. A full four-year program was resumed in 1933, and the high school level was terminated in 1946.
As the enrollees at Morris College continued striving for Christian and intellectual goals, only African-Americans were in attendance. It wasn’t until 1961 that the doors of Morris College opened to all ethnic groups. Presently, as a center for training teachers and ministers, it continues to promote the intellectual and personal development of each student it admits.
Sixteen-building, 33-acre campus is a blend of buildings built from the 1920s to the 1980s, including the president’s home built in 1986. Morris is one of only a few senior colleges built and operated solely under the auspices of African Americans.
