Established by North Carolina's General Assembly in 1891 with the express mission of helping African-Americans develop careers as scientists and engineers, North Carolina A&T State University has played a major role in the modern history of the United States. Its alumni include prominent astronauts, scientists, and politicians who have served as role models for Americans of all ethnic groups. This historically black college has been cited by many scholars as the hub of the southern Civil Rights movement.Like other successful, prominent black colleges in the south, North Carolina A&T State University was still fully segregated in 1960. "Aggies" tired of prejudice and intolerance in their college town chose to stage the first sit-in at the Woolworth's lunch counter in Greensboro. "The A&T Four" inspired activists throughout the South to stage similar protests, paving the way for full integration enjoyed by today's students.
