Central State University, in Wilberforce, Ohio also has a branch campus 10 miles away in Dayton. The school is Ohio's only public historically black college. In 1856, Wilberforce University--named for the great British abolitionist William Wilberforce--was founded in Tawawa Springs, Ohio, and affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1941, the school's combined Normal (teacher training) and Industrial Department expanded from a two-year to a four-year program, and a few years later that department split from Wilberforce. In 1965, the new school became Central State University.The historically black college offers a variety of baccalaureate degrees and is the home of the CSU Institute for Urban Education, which prepares teachers to succeed in 21st-century urban classrooms. Central State University also has highly ranked athletic teams, an excellent marching band, and a renowned chorus that has been nominated for several Grammy awards.
