Cheyney University of Pennsylvania is located in Cheyney, Pennsylvania just west of Philadelphia. The historically black college was founded by Quakers in 1837 as the African Institute, to train African Americans as teachers. In 1902, the school's site was moved to George Cheyney's farm, and in 1983, the school joined the Pennsylvania state university system as Cheyney University of Pennsylvania.Today, the university is home to students from all around the world who seek undergraduate and graduate degrees from the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Education, and the Philadelphia Urban Education Site. Cheyney University of Pennsylvania's Academic Success Center provides group and individual tutorials and workshops online, and also offers a quiet place for students to study. CBS newsman Ed Bradley and former U.S. ambassador to South Africa, Joseph Segars, are both alumni of this historically black college.
