Allen University, in Columbia, South Carolina was founded in 1870 as Payne Institute by the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church to educate newly freed slaves. It was the first historically black college in the state to train clergy, and it also conferred law and vocational degrees. The school moved from Cokesbury to Columbia in 1880 and was renamed for Richard Allen, an AME Church Founder.Allen University is a coed Christian liberal arts college still affiliated with the AME Church. The historically black college confers B.A. and B.S. degrees in eight academic areas: biology, business administration, chemistry, English, mathematics, music, religion, and social science. The school also offers students a rich choice of organizations and sports and a satisfying college community life.
