Benedict College, in Columbia, South Carolina is a historically black college founded in 1870. The first school, named Benedict Institute, was located on an abandoned plantation. Its mission was to train emancipated slaves to be teachers and Baptist clergy. Benedict College was originally affiliated with the Baptist Church and maintains that affiliation to this day.Since its founding, Benedict College's mission has been to be "a power for good in society." Today, this private, coed, historically black college is one of the top producers of African-Americans with undergraduate degrees in physics, as well as of African-Americans who have gone on to earn graduate degrees in physics. The college offers bachelor's degrees in nearly 30 major areas of study through its four schools: Business and Economics; Education; Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences; and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
