South Carolina missionaries founded Morris College in 1908 with the mission of building a comprehensive learning center for African-American youth. By the end of World War II, Morris College eliminated its K-12 program to focus exclusively on granting four-year degrees in the liberal arts. This historically black college in Sumter attracts students from not just South Carolina, but the southeastern United States.Under the stewardship of Luns C. Richardson, one of the longest-tenured presidents of any historically black college in America, Morris College has energized students who want to lead a life of service. Drawing on the school's missionary roots, faculty and staff help students understand their broader roles in society. With prominent alumni in the fields of business, politics, and social activism, Morris College delivers on the promise to encourage students to overcome social challenges and to achieve success.
