History

TSU is a four-year, state-supported, coed, liberal arts university founded in 1912 as a land-grant institution. In 1979, TSU merged with the University of Tennessee at Nashville, which was founded in 1971.

The school has evolved from a normal school to a four-year college in 1922 to a university in 1951. The University became a full-fledged land-grant institution in 1958. The center at Nashville met the requirements for accreditation as a four-year degree-granting institution in 1971.

TSU has a threefold mission as a land-grant institution that provides cooperative extension services and programs in the agricultural sciences; as a comprehensive institution that provides programming in agriculture, allied health, arts and sciences, business, education, engineering and technology, home economics, human services, nursing, and public administration; and as an urban institution that provides both degree and nondegree programs that are appropriate and accessible to a working population.

TSU has two campuses. The main campus is located in a residential area of the city on 450 acres and ../includes sixty-five buildings, farmland, and pastures. The downtown campus is located in a large modern building that houses the business and evening programs, a library, a cafeteria, and meeting rooms. A $112-million capital improvement project completed in the mid-1990s included seven new buildings and a completely landscaped campus with courtyards, plazas, and a state-of-the-art utility tunnel.
