History
Tougaloo College is a four-year, private, coed, liberal arts college founded in 1869 by the American Missionary Association of New York, which purchased 500 acres of a former plantation. Its purpose was to train young people "irrespective of their religious tenets" and to educate with "the most liberal principles for the benefit of our citizens in general." College courses were first offered in 1897, and the first Bachelor of Arts degree was awarded in 1901. In 1954, the name was changed to Tougaloo Southern Christian Institute, reflecting its merger with the Southern Christian Institute. The school name was changed again to the current Tougaloo College in 1963.
The campus has nineteen buildings, including College House, the home to the College president and his family, and several cottages and apartments for faculty members wishing to live on campus as well as scholars-in-residence. The Tougaloo Art Collection, housed in Warren Hall, contains more than 1,000 works of art.
Thirty-eight percent of Mississippi’s black physicians and 23 percent of its black dentists are Tougaloo graduates. The College is a United Negro College Fund school.
