Having emerged in 1888 from a small Protestant Episcopal assembly in Lawrenceville, Virginia, Saint Paul's College has grown into one of the most influential and innovative teacher education centers in the United States. Since this historically black college was founded with the mission of educating teachers it has actively faced the challenges of preparing educators for careers in urban and rural communities.Responding to the changing demand for teachers throughout the United States, Saint Paul's College offers a unique program to encourage single parents to complete four-year degrees. Participants in the Single Parent Support System live on campus and enjoy convenient child care services. The black college's Child Development Center plays a role in the education of teachers as well. Students staff the center and participate in the development of their peers' children, earning college credit and performing a needed service while gaining personal fulfillment.
