Bluefield State College, a historically black college, is located in Bluefield, West Virginia about 100 miles south of Charleston. The school began in 1895 as a black state teachers' college and was integrated after 1954. By the 1960s, the college was providing four-year degrees in teacher education, engineering technology, and numerous arts and science programs.Over the years, a number of two-year programs were created in order to meet local needs. Today, Bluefield State College is a four-year, state-supported commuter college. The historically black school's emphasis is on career and technical programs, and students can earn baccalaureate and two-year degrees and certificates in the arts and sciences, nursing, engineering technology, computer science, education, and business. Bluefield State College also has cooperative agreements with two-year colleges and offers many classes and programs off-campus and through online learning.
