West Virginia State University was established in 1891 as a land-grant institution for black students. Located in the Appalachian foothills near Charleston, West Virginia, West Virginia State University originated as a school for applied education in agriculture and mechanical arts. It has since reinvented itself as an ethnically-integrated commuter school, emphasizing applied career education for working adults.Although West Virginia State University is no longer predominately black, it still promotes the values of racial equality and universal access to education. The institution offers a range of associate and bachelor degrees in business, liberal arts, science and social science, and pre-professional studies. In recognition of the needs of adult learners, West Virginia State University offers a range of continuing education and distance learning programs.
